Creative Process Analysis
At the start of my ISU I had an issue with choosing what my setting for my photo essay would be. I could not think of a theme in which I could capture the elements of art. It wasn’t until I was driving home that I realized that my neighbourhood would be a perfect setting. At first I felt challenged to find a proper theme, until I was inspired by what was right in front of me. I began to think of the different things in my neighbourhood, the trees, rocks, parks, kids playing etc. I tried to imagine the type of photos I would take before actually taking them. I began to plan and generate ideas. I would take pictures of the trees and the rocks and the roads during the day but would wait until sunset to begin taking photos as the park. I took pictures throughout my neighbourhood with my 6 year old next door neighbour who wanted to play photographers assistant. We explored the neighbourhood as I took various pictures of the rocks, granite, grass, fence, basketball net and so on. I attempted to get different angles as she would life objects or I would try to get lower/higher to the ground. Out of the 25 or so pictures that I took I chose ten that were my favourite. I chose these certain photos because they expressed texture, colour, shape, line and space, they expressed the elements of Art. I began to work on these photos at first on Photoshop and then switched over to Lightroom. It took me a few days to edit my photos, tweaking the contrast, colours, lighting and constantly dodging and burning. After finishing this I took the time to revise my photos with the advice of classmates. I have uploaded my pictures up to my website to present. Reflecting back to my creative process, I wish I took more time to really explore my neighbourhood and perhaps go down the jogging trails to take more pictures.
Initial Reaction to the Work
Initially I had a very positive reaction to my work. I thought that my two themes of my neighbourhood and the elements of art were well cached. I was happy with myself for meeting most of the goals I gave myself in regards to my work in the proposal. It wasn’t until I analyzed these photos that I began to interpret things differently. I saw my flaws and things I should have focused upon more. I also began to compare my photos with my classmate’s photo essays and thought of mine to be sub-par in comparison. Aesthetically I think that some of my pictures are great (the sunset, the little girl holding garden toys) and that some were sub-par (the girl holding the rock, the basketball net). I found some challenges that I faced in my process was finding the right times to take photos and having enough time to edit the pictures. I regret not having taken a adequate time to learn about all of the different types of ways I could edit a picture on lightroom. All together I feel as though I have been successful in designing, creating and editing my ISU Projects. reflecting I have realized things that I could have done to enhance my work so Ihave learned a lesson for future work.
